- Guiding Principle Number 1 - Develop a "Trust Based Relationship"A “Trust Based Relationship” is defined as “An existing or potential customer that recognizes and understands the added value and superior service provided by you and your organization and reciprocates through loyalty and by paying a higher cost than offered by the competitor for the same or comparable product.” Imagine a sales environment where your primary focus is delivering exceptional customer service, rather than fixating on the competition. By consistently exceeding customer expectations, you cultivate a relationship where factors like price and rival offerings become secondary considerations. Customers who feel genuinely valued are less inclined to switch providers over a few dollars, as the superior service they receive holds greater significance. This approach not only fosters loyalty but also positions your business as an indispensable partner in their success.13

- Guiding Principle Number 2 - Planning and PreparationThroughout my experience working with hundreds of sales professionals, I've observed a recurring and significant issue: a widespread lack of planning and preparation. Many salespeople adopt a "fly by the seat of your pants" mentality, hoping that their daily activities will somehow contribute to their success, often without clearly defined goals. However, effective sales performance requires deliberate planning and a strategic approach. Each action taken should be purposefully aligned with specific objectives, ensuring consistent progress toward achieving desired outcomes. By prioritizing meticulous planning and preparation, sales professionals can enhance their productivity and significantly improve their chances of success.5
- Guiding Principle Number 3 - Time is Your Most Valauable ResourceTime is your most valuable asset in sales, with only a limited number of hours each day to achieve your objectives. While having a daily plan is essential, unexpected situations, such as urgent customer calls, late orders, or incorrect shipments, can arise, demanding immediate attention and potentially derailing your schedule. Effectively managing these interruptions is crucial to maintaining productivity and progressing toward your goals. Remember, it's your responsibility to manage your territory and drive sales. By implementing time management strategies, you can handle unexpected interruptions effectively without jeopardizing your daily goals. Ensure that every action you take contributes to your objectives, allowing you to manage your time proactively rather than letting it control you.7
- Guiding Principle Number 4 - Go Get Em - New Prospects and CustomersCustomer attrition is an inevitable aspect of business, occurring due to factors such as natural turnover, bankruptcies, or competitive pressures. While strategies like vertical integration and internal growth can mitigate some losses, they may not fully compensate, especially if existing relationships have been maximized. Therefore, continuous prospecting is crucial for replenishing and expanding your customer base. Keep your prospecting activities active with a good number of prospects. This number must be manageable to allow impactful and effective prospecting. Once you have integrated the new customer, you must provide a level of exceptional service that they cannot deny. Create a relationship based on mutual expectations and trust. One in which they can rely on you to do what you say you will do. Customers will not make a change for a few dollars.7

- Guiding Principle Number 5 - Overcoming the Price ObjectionIn sales, the emphasis should be on demonstrating the unique value you bring to the client rather than on pricing alone. If negotiations are predominantly about price, it often indicates that the client hasn't fully recognized the benefits and solutions you offer. Therefore, initial conversations should focus on understanding the client's specific needs and illustrating how your services can address them effectively. While pricing will inevitably be part of the discussion, it's crucial to steer the dialogue toward the tangible value and outcomes your service provides. By establishing a strong value proposition, clients are more likely to appreciate the comprehensive benefits of your offering, making them less inclined to focus solely on cost. "Never quote a price until you've established value."5
- Guiding Principle Number 6 - Presenting Yourt Products and ServicesYou’ve completed the discovery phase by building rapport and asking thoughtful, strategic questions. You've sparked their interest and earned the chance to present your solution. At this stage, the prospect sees you as a potential supplier and has agreed to a formal presentation and proposal. This is your one opportunity to make a convincing case. Your presentation needs to be structured logically and deliver a compelling message that leads them to say yes.6
- Guiding Principle Number 7 - "Keep Em"You must be actively prospecting, but the challenging task of growing your business organically can be made easier by simply retaining your existing clients. Have a consistent nurture strategy in place—one that is mutually agreed upon by both you and the customer. Ongoing, meaningful contact is vital to the long-term success of your business. What steps will you take to ensure your client stays your client? How will you show them they are truly valued? Create a formal process that communicates your appreciation, which should include: • Regularly scheduled "how are we doing" meetings • Fresh, innovative ideas • Relevant industry news and emerging trends • Both formal and informal business reviews7
